Pipe Dream

Pipe Dream from John Daniels on Vimeo.

This wave was one that stuck, not for a week or a month, but for years. I still remember it play by play in my mind like it happen yesterday. If you've surfed Pipeline, you've experienced a emotional roller coaster. One minute you're battling it out with a hundred guys trying to catch the next wave. The next minute you're going over the falls hoping your not going to break your neck. Sure enough, your alive, in one piece paddling out for more, but this next attempt is going to be a bit different then the last. The sight of the next set sends chills down your spine. Your heart is pounding, head is down and your committed to catching that wave. Next thing you know, your in it and ready for your quick-tight bottom turn into the barrel. Once you make the barrel you have to hold a straight line for the light at the end of the tunnel. When the light gets brighter and you come flying out with the spray on your back, it's that moment that sticks. That is why I surf. For that moment in time that is set apart from all the rest.

Pushing the limits

Jenny on Cheap Lipstick 5.9
photo: N.Knapp
This is a photo of my wife at New Jack City, near Barstow. We were out there with friends for Friday and Saturday of MLK weekend. I really enjoy watching my wife take a hard climb and turn it into an easy climb. Jenny is now repeating some of my climbs and crushing them. She has really come a long way in the past few months. Love ya babe. Keep it up!

ouch!

Had a rough go of a "Big Rock" 5.9 friction climb. My hand pulled out of a little two finger Hueco (hole). I was pretty upset so, I put some tape on the flapper and finished the route.

Palomar Boulders V3

This is a short video I made from a 30 min. session at Palomar Boulders. There are 3 climbable boulders there that provide a few climbs on each. This one I do in the video is my favorite. It's a sit start with feet on the base of the rock and hands on a chest high rail. The next move is a left hand to a good crimp. Third move is right hand to a really sharp micro crimp. Fourth move is a quick bump out of the bad crimp to a slopy crimp at chest level. The next move is a very dynamic reach to a 2 finger pocket. It's the crux and my favorite move by far. You have to stay very close to the rock, as it is easy to come off the bad right sloper if you make any aggressive movements. Once you get the two finger pocket you are golden and off to jug city the rest of the way up.

If you watch the video and take note of the beta, you will see yourself flashing this climb very soon. Wish you the best of luck and stay safe!!
